OCPP 1.6J · 2.0.1 · 2.1

We speak every version of OCPP.

Charger onboarding, remote start/stop, firmware updates, diagnostics, configuration, full message coverage. One CSMS talks to 1.6J, 2.0.1 and 2.1 chargers side by side, whatever the brand.

How OCPP actually works

Each charger opens one WebSocket to the CSMS and keeps it open. Both sides then send small JSON frames over it, in real time.

One frame, four parts

[,,,]

MessageTypeId

What kind of frame this is. 2 is a request (CALL).

The version is agreed when the socket opens

GET /ocpp/CP-A01 HTTP/1.1
Upgrade: websocket
Sec-WebSocket-Protocol: ocpp2.1, ocpp2.0.1, ocpp1.6

HTTP/1.1 101 Switching Protocols
Sec-WebSocket-Protocol: ocpp2.0.1

Five kinds of frame

  • 2CALLA request, from either side
  • 3CALLRESULTThe successful reply
  • 4CALLERRORThe request failed
  • 5CALLRESULTERRORA reply that couldn't be processed2.1
  • 6SENDA one-way message, no reply expected2.1

A reply always reuses the request’s MessageId. That’s how a CSMS juggling thousands of chargers keeps every conversation straight.

Three live versions. One CSMS.

OCPP 1.6 and 2.0.1 aren't compatible with each other; 2.1 builds on 2.0.1. Our CSMS speaks all three, so a mixed network just works.

  1. 2015 We support

    OCPP 1.6

    • JSON over WebSocket (1.6J) alongside SOAP
    • Smart charging for load balancing and charge profiles
    • Local list management

The worldwide de facto standard, still widely deployed.

  2. 2018Superseded

    OCPP 2.0

    • An entirely new set-up for OCPP 2.x

Not compatible with 1.x. Succeeded by 2.0.1.

  3. 2020 We support

    OCPP 2.0.1

    IEC 63584 · 2024

    • Device management and monitoring
    • Improved transaction handling
    • Added security
    • Smart charging and ISO 15118
    • Display messages

Approved as international standard IEC 63584 in 2024.

  4. 2025 We support

    OCPP 2.1

    IEC 63584-210 · 2025

    • Bidirectional charging (V2X)
    • DER control
    • Battery swapping
    • Local cost calculation
    • Prepaid cards, ad hoc card payment, dynamic QR codes

Builds on 2.0.1: application logic for 2.0.1 stays compatible.

Run every charger from one place

Start, stop, reset, update and limit any charger on the network, remotely. No site visits for the things software can fix.

Remote control

Any brand, any version

Every OCPP charger connects, whatever the brand. 1.6J, 2.0.1 and 2.1 run side by side on the same network.

Secure by default

Encrypted connections, with certificates on both ends where your chargers support it. Signed firmware updates.

OCPP 2.1

Ready for what’s next

The newest version of OCPP is already supported, so your network is ready when vehicles and grids are.

  • Bidirectional charging (V2X)
  • DER control
  • Battery swapping
  • Local cost calculation
  • Dynamic QR codes
  • Prepaid & ad hoc card payments
